Easter traditions and Žudije

There are many specific and colorful traditions surrounding Easter throughout Croatia.

From the hills of Zagorje, over the mountains of Lika to the shores of the Adriatic, Croatian people have been observing and honoring Easter for centuries. And many places have developed and cherished their own rites and rituals of Easter celebration. One such place is Vodice, Dalmatia.

There, the depiction of the events of the Holy Week takes up a special place in Easter festivities.

In the 19th century a particular custom developed and has since been commemorated symbols of vegetation and fertility and they ring their bells though the Kastav villages to shepherd in the new fruitful year after the bitter winter.

The custom of Žudije (from Juda which means Judas in Croatian) begins on Maundy Thursday and lasts until Easter Sunday. The custom involves 12 men, usually dressed as Roman legionnaires and their leader, the 13th man – a “Judas”, watching over Jesus’ grave.

They watch over the grave in shifts until Easter Sunday when they fall to their knees at the sight of the Resurrection, as they have been doing so for the last 108 years.

Procession of the Cross

Island of Hvar has been upholding this Easter tradition for more than 500 years completely uninterrupted.

This tradition, being held for such a vast time period, has been awarded with the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity back in 2009.

The Procession starts from not one but 6 Parish churches all at the same time.

Za križen every year starts at exactly at 22 hours so that six Processions start simultaneously from six Parish churches from the middle part of the island, in villages Vrbanj, Vrboska, Jelsa, Pitve, Vrisnik and Svirče.

Each group is led by a cross-bearer who never rests during an 8 hour walk while passing a total of 25 kilometers.

All of the groups proceed through all other villages before completing the traditional procession manifestation.
